A guide to help women find the joy and confidence needed for successful childbirth • Provides breathing and vocalizing exercises for use during pregnancy and labor • Contains inspiring stories from women who successfully applied these techniques • Includes a 26-minute CD of tambura music to accompany the singing exercises Giving birth is a veritable “explosion” of joy. The baby arrives when the life force surges up so strongly in the woman that it breaks all limitations in order to spring forth. But in our modern culture, women often do not feel empowered to give birth by themselves. They want the “experts” to handle the birth for them, out of fear of the pain or the possible safety risks to them or the baby. Dr. FrIdIrick Leboyer, author of the groundbreaking book Birth without Violence, which looks at birth from the baby’s point of view, now explores the birth process from the mother’s perspective. Through the heartfelt letters of women sharing their experiences, which are accompanied by his advice and commentary, he reveals how women can develop the skills needed to create a successful and joyful birth. Dr. Leboyer stresses that proper breathing is the most important component for women going through childbirth. The breathing should come from the lower belly and the exhalation should be accompanied by a musical tone. Without this musical dimension, breathing is merely a physical exercise. Dr. Leboyer found that by using the music of the tambura, an Indian stringed instrument whose tones represent the embodiment of universal harmony, women are transported to a place of inner peace. The Art of Giving Birth includes breathing and singing exercises and gentle movements to be practiced throughout pregnancy and during labor. Also included is a 26-minute CD of tambura music to accompany the exercises.
Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, whose landmark documentary THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN challenged how people think about birth, have created a guide to help pregnant women make informed decisions about how and where they want to give birth. No matter where a woman feels most comfortable having her baby, whether in the hospital, at home, or a birth center, she will face a series of decisions that can be confusing and overwhelming. Lake and Epstein have boiled down the many alternatives into an easily followed guide that includes discussions as diverse as choosing an obstetrician or a midwife, having a doula, and the positives and negatives of epidurals. Pregnant women will come away fully informed and empowered. With resources.

PPD or regular depression - not wanting help, what to do?
With both my pregnancies I had prenatal and post partum depression. My youngest is 7 months old, and I had my tubes tied after him. I quit taking my medication because it was making it much worse, and I was in therapy, but I no longer want to seek it. It was always about my boyfriend and never addressed what I wanted to. I feel like a loser, and I hate my life. As much as I love my kids, I don't think I want to be a mom anymore. I just want to be able to go and do the things other 22 year olds do. I feel stuck in my relationship, and even though I love him, I don't know really where I want to go with it. I want a job, but its not easy to do. We are having such a hard time financially, and I just want to run away. I feel like taking meds and seeking treatment will eventually only lead to more meds and more therapy. Any advice?

Mid-back pain and upper abdominal pain during pregnancy?
I'm 28 weeks pregnant with twins and last night I woke up with an intense pain in the middle of my back. This pain extended down my sides and across my upper abdomen and wouldn't go away when I changed positions. After about an hour of back rubbing from my husband it finally started to fade and I went back to sleep. Question is what could it be? It didn't feel like contractions and the pain was in the middle of my back and upper abdomen not my lower back and lower abdomen. I plan on addressing it with the doc at my next appt in a week, unless it could be a sign of something serious. What do you think?
You didn't say which side the pain was on. If it's upper right quadrant pain, then you should give your doctor a call to discuss. Most likely it's nothing--it could be baby movements, or your organs getting squished to make room for the baby--but upper right quadrant pain can sometimes be more serious.
Pay attention to the pain, see if it continues, or if it's worse after you eat. There's a possibility that it's indicating a problem with your liver or gallbladder. Don't panic, because those problems are not life-threatening or baby-threatening, but they do need to be dealt with, and should definitely be mentioned to your doctor.

SEXUAL POSITIONS FOR LOVERS encourages lovers to look beyond the classic missionary style by presenting a wide range of alternatives to choose from. Through several detailed demonstrations, four attractive couples experiment with positions that promise more satisfying results, and even play around with props such as furniture. Appropriate for couples of all ages and physical conditions, the program offers options for people dealing with health issues such as excess weight, pregnancy, back pain, and arthritis.
With a fresh approach to a common problem, this self-help guide to overcoming back pain advocates adopting the natural, healthy posture of athletes, young children, and people from traditional societies the world over. Arguing that most of what our culture has taught us about posture is misguided—even unhealthy—and exploring the current epidemic of back pain, many of the commonly cited reasons for the degeneration of spinal discs and the stress on muscles that leads to back pain are examined and debunked. The historical and anthropological roots of poor posture in Western cultures are studied as is the absence of back pain complaints in the cultures of Africa, Asia, South America, and rural Europe. Eight detailed chapters provide illustrated step-by-step instructions for making simple, powerful changes to seated, standing, and sleeping positions. No special equipment or exercise is required, and effects are often immediate.
Specialized yoga instruction is provided in YOGA WISDOM FOR BACK PAIN AND TIGHT HIPS.
